The Marriage at Cana by Gerard David, painted in 1500, is an example of a religious painting which demonstrates the technique of oil on wood, 100 x 128 cm. Religious paintings were categorized as historical paintings and therefore the most prestigious genre by the French Académie de peinture et de sculpture.
